A Triangle Home in a Rectangle World

Standing out makes all the difference.

What’s up, friends?

Metaphors are great for this month. For example, similar to the LGBTQ community being a minority in a heteronormative world, today's triangle-shaped home stands out in the dated rectangular neighborhood that it is located in.

Though, if I’m being real, this home is technically more of a rhombus. But, for the sake of broad appeal, let’s agree it’s a triangle, okay?

Located in an older town (home of the over 150 year old University of Illinois Urbana Champaign), this 1974 home has 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, and the character of a contemporary property.

You know how I love to hate-on the details of the listing description… but it noted how each room “will impress you more than the last,” and I kinda agree. Surprisingly, we’re in for a treat with this one.

Two two-story features bless the living room. First, the rock fireplace wall that stretches all the way to the skylight. Second, the two rows of ceiling-high windows that overlook the water. Besides that, I gotta give props to the conversation-pit couch in front of that fireplace!

Right around the corner, of course, is another small living space.

Oh, and even the powder room hinges on contemporary design: a striking black granite wall next to a sink that (seems to) balance atop a giant rock.

Typically, I don’t love a mirror wall, yet this one captivates me. Being next to the window-doors, the illusion of a brighter, wider space is successful (also thanks to the long hanging lights and lengthy table).

Speaking of length, the kitchen has an interesting concept: take an open space, then jam two disconnected counters into the wall. Make sure the microwave is IN the wall also!

Jokes aside, the flow between rooms is aided by this unique layout. It even allows space for some curves: a small table, circular window, and an indoor spiral staircase.

Recently, $50k was cut from the listing price. That means: the current owners are now asking for a measly $599.9k because, obviously, the 599 versus 600 makes such an impact psychologically.

Upstairs, the primary bedroom uses its open space to emphasize the grandiose of the home.

I love how there’s multiple windows of different sizes. It makes every inch of the room interesting to look at.

Of the primary bedroom’s bathroom’s features, the floating cabinetry and a bathtub-mounted television are definite highlights.

Although there is a primary bedroom of this home, it doesn’t stand out once you’ve seen the other bedrooms. And I don’t mean that as a bad thing. Just take a look:

They’re nice rooms! Kinda boring in comparison to the rest of the home, but they’re not drab. That being said, if you were hoping for a bedroom suite that makes the other bedrooms cower in jealousy, you’re not getting that here.

In terms of amenities, the open concept and large windows do culminate into this library-slash-office space. I wish the wrap-around book-nook was closer to the window, but that’s just a nitpick!

What other marvelous features does this contemporary home offer?

An entire room for the washing machine. That’s it.

Outside, this home offers you a petite concrete slab for lounging, next to the grand concrete slab of a driveway.

Yeah, this property doesn’t offer much “wow factor” in the amenity space. It just has “the basics” of home necessities. But, with what it does have, it does very well with them. And that is always a detail worth having.
