Celebrate Cinco de Mayo INSIDE Mexico!
Rolling hills or bumpy house?
What’s up, friends?
On this Cinco de Mayo (”Fifth of May” / Mexican Holiday), I’ve decided to take us across the US Southern border to a home that is a genuine work of art:
Javier Senosiain's “Casa Orgánica”
Built in 1998, this Mexico City based home comes from the mind of Javier Senosiain. Known for his organic architecture, Senosiain set out to create a home that spoke to the natural connection between humankind and nature.
While there is a practicality with the copious wire-work supporting the property (seen below), an intrinsic playfulness has been incorporated into the overall design. For example: Atop the roof, a small protrusion resembles a fin -which was placed there after the designer realized the window resembled a shark.
Originally constructed to only have one bedroom, a second section (and connective tunnel) was built to accommodate for an entire family to live there as well. For clues hinting at what’s to come, here’s a graphic of the home’s cross-section:
Let’s enter this masterpiece…
Past the ornate front door, the outdoors meet the indoors in an entryway that’s a feast for the eyes. Pastel yellow couches organized to resemble a flower! Rainbow mosaic glass wall! Stone walkway to another room! My jaw is on the floor, in the best way.
Need even more relaxation space? There’s another living room just down the hall. And that tan carpet that matches the walls? It’s everywhere in this house.
This home is so artistic it doesn’t even feel corny -to me, it just feels less like a home and more of an explorable art piece. I mean, there isn’t a single photo of this home that couldn’t be framed as artwork by itself!
What if you needed some space to jot down your ideas? A fluid space that complimented the flow of the home and the flow of your thoughts…
Every creative’s dream: this office. Right off the second floor staircase, you travel down the narrow bookcase into this thought cavern; All of the aforementioned curves, colors, and windows, but now in a cohesive corner of ideation. Your books? Nearby. Your office supplies? Tucked away with flush built-in cabinetry. Your next big idea? Harnessed with the help of a long window, allowing an easy connection between yourself and the nature around you.
Sleep well and long on this elongated bed: it has a circular section of mattress that then extends the wall, mirroring the floating couches of the home. And, here, the same bookshelf walls provide opportunities for color, knowledge, and your own personal flair.
Oh, and those huge windows? Don’t worry, they’re not in the en-suite bathroom… in the exact same way, at least.
Bam, skylight! In the nature of this home being “one with nature,” some rooms don’t have any “typical” windows. At the same time, the architect wanted to ensure the spaces didn’t feel claustrophobic or underground… hence the booming hole in the ceiling.
Before we head outside for the highly-coveted exterior tour, let’s have a moment for the hallways/canals/connections of this property:
At first glance, did you notice the curve down the side of the house? Well, it’s a slide.
From every angle, window, and age, this “yard” space is a whimsical wonderland. The rolling hills (of your roof) play into the natural appeal of the property -while the sculptural elements ground this place in a heightened reality of play.
Unfortunately, this home is currently closed to the public. Hopefully, one day soon it’ll open again so we can all experience this masterpiece ourselves. For now, these photos will have to do.
