Fire-Resistant Desert Home
It keeps things cool in dry times.
What’s up, friends?
Given the ongoing wildfires that have devastated much of Los Angeles, I thought that -this week- it would be appropriate to look at a home that has a high priority for fire prevention.
Located within a gated community in Sonoma, CA, this +4k sq. ft. single-story property may not actually be in a desert, but the dry and air cactuses don’t make it a stranger to wildfires. As we explore the home, I’ll highlight the materials used to help protect the home from fires (and keep it cool in the hot summers).
If you pay attention (though it’s fairly noticeable), you’ll see a recurring implementation of open space in and around the home. This is great for fire resistance as the property’s separation from other buildings and foliage acts as a spacial barrier.
Right away, the texture of the roof tiles catches your eye. Their condensed and unique shape creates squiggles that really scratch your brain. More importantly, though, clay tiles are naturally fire-resistant!
Look up to the wooden beams that line the ceiling. Not only do they add interest and depth to the entire space, but they create a ranch-like feeling to the room.
I can’t say I’m a fan of using dead animal parts throughout my home -yes, these antlers aren’t the only bone-like material on this property. At the same time, at least it fits the environment of being in the desert.
While the metal appliances are great for heat resistance, they look a bit out of place here. This grand island is a sleek unit for storage, meal prep, and sitting down to eat. The looming antler chandelier does not make me feel cozy though. I am scared of it.
Furthermore, as the homeowner has proven to be a collector of handmade and one-of-a-kind artwork, it’s shocking how the giant canvas of limes looks like something you’d find in the clearance section of a TJ Maxx.
Let’s take a peek at the home’s amenities: an office space, built-in art displays, and a home gym -that doubles as a pool house!
Plus, you’ll notice the use of tile flooring throughout all of these places. It’s used all over the home as it’s not only naturally cooling, but also fire resistant.
Both guest bedrooms are similar in size and design. Each has a that antique wood, ceiling fan, and private double doors for a quick and easy exit outside.
Nearby, the bathroom continues the tile motif with a gorgeous deep blue tiling on the shower -but just wait until you see the en-suite:
While this tub looks a bit uncomfortable, it’s undeniably a work of art. Attached to this bathroom is the primary bedroom: private double doors, a walk-through closet, and plenty of space.
Once again, we get a lot of tile on the ground. This matching tile provides a natural flow between and interior and exterior of the home. Also, the outdoor ceilings have fans to keep you cool in the shade.
To be frank, though, this backyard is stunning! It has plenty of open space, a fire pit with cozy chairs, lounge chairs, an in-ground pool and jacuzzi, and a huge table that’s perfect for outdoor meals with friends and family.
Not to be cliche, but this property really is paradise right in your backyard.
On behalf of myself and everyone at Estate, our thoughts and love are with those affected by the LA wildfires. Through community, we will rebuild! Stay strong.
