Labor Day at Abe Lincoln’s Apartment
Known for his honesty, not his decorating.
What’s up, friends?
As we reflect on this Labor Day, we should do so from the comfort of a famous American’s apartment:
Taylor Swift? No, too pricey. Al Capone? No, too scary.
We need an iconic face whose art has nothing to do with them! How about…
Located in “The Land of Lincoln” (Springfield, IL), this 1940-built property just hit the market with a recent remodel. Is every cheap Lincoln-themed bell and whistle within its walls? Yes, and there are even more colorful things the more you explore!

Upon entering, your eyes immediately hit the crème-de-la-creme: the mural of Springfield. And while it looks like it could be Chat GPT-created art, it’s not -it’s just gleefully tacky! The painting features (what I assume to be) prominent places around town, all with a giant Lincoln looming over them.

After looking at the motivational throw pillow, I’m starting to understand the colorful mess of this home: it’s just a happy place. Do I think that it’s a bit much? Hell yeah, I do.
These drapes appear to look like a stack of CD cases -which do contrast well with the royal blue seats.

Somewhere in Springfield, a diner is missing its floor. I know because I just found it inside this kitchen.

Yeah, the checkerboard flooring matches the whimsy of this room… but the contemporary kitchen fixtures around it dull the shine. It’s like they only partially “committed to the bit.”

Evidence of the original 1940 layout is noticed by the continuation of the floor to the home’s front entrance. While I understand the renovators had limited space to fit an entire apartment into 1184 sq. feet, I’ve seen New York “shoebox” apartments do this better.

They named the bedroom “The Hideout”? Nothing about this “room” is hidden. People could watch you from every angle…

Did I mention the surround sound speakers, not-so-private nook, and slanted staircase access? Well, now I have.

No lack of funky accoutrements is found in this bathroom. Those kitchen tiles make a reappearance here -and I love it. Their aesthetic emphasized with appropriate knicknacks to create a cohesive vision.
One more thing to note about this bathroom, though… it’s literally uncovered and attached to the kitchen:

Technically, this bathroom is an en-suite… because it’s the only one… and that they share the same open air space. Imagine trying to unwind in the bathtub, but you’re still smelling the chicken you made for dinner!

Welcome to The Party Hallway. I’m calling it that because of the egregious lettering on the wall. It’s a cute little nook with a 12-foot shuffleboard table.

Define irony: having a beer sign that promotes another state’s city… while in Illinois’s capital.
Leaning into the weirder features of the property, let’s take a close-up look at some of the art scattered around the place:
Framed giant woman? Meditating dog? Parkour stick figures?

1980s photoshoot of a country singer on a plate -that’s atop a vodka recipe book?

Outside, you've got a private bocce ball court. Lucky you!

No, because the real luck comes in a feature you’ve maybe noticed in the lighting this whole time… full black lights!!

I hope you relaxed this Labor Day. And that you reflected on this apartment that maybe Abe Lincoln walked passed one day. Who’s to know?
