Lighthouse + Outhouse = ❓
Maybe the light’s gas-powered.
What’s up, friends?
Today, for the first edition of July, I’ve decided we take a peak into a tall, bright, secluded trend: lighthouses!
Okay…yeah, they might not actually be poppin’ in the algorithm right now, but this little one in Canton, Maine, is worth checking out.

Built in 1937, this tiny little property still packs a punch! At only 480 sqft, it holds space for multiple beds (not bedROOMS), a kitchen, a living space, and a bathroom (kinda). With 360 degree views of Lake Anasagunticook, this cozy stone cottage offers all the privacy you need -unless someone is standing at the shore with binoculars….
Speaking of the shore, how do we even get to this island?

Travel across a small plot of land and we’ll find ourselves at a boat dock! Through the trees, I see a neighbor's house -but nobody else seems to be close by. And the neighbors don’t even have a dock of their own. It’s all ours.

I love how the perimeter of the island uses stones, just like the cottage has. Or is the house like the island? Which came first?

Inside, we’re abruptly greeted by -oh, the dining table? It’s red, it’s a centerpiece, it’s a bit retro. It contrasts nicely with the blue couch by the wall -but the striped blue rug underneath the table ties everything together nicely!

While space is limited, for the most part, this kitchen doesn’t skimp out: an oven, a good size refrigerator, some counter space, some cabinet space. It has enough for modest meal prep. Enough to cook for a few (and only a few) days.

We’re moving fast, but let’s head up to the bedroom -I mean… head over to the (singular only) bed:

Like… it’s cute, I guess? The comforter fits the vibe of the cottage, but I can’t say it’s my favorite design. I can say, though, that this tiny fireplace is cute as a button!

Over in the other bedroom -I mean bed structure- a TRIPLE LAYER BUNK BED stretches all the way up to the ceiling. No thank you. I’ll take the bottom bunk please.

Everyone, take it in. Because this is it for the interior.

Wait, where’s the bathroom? We gotta figure that out…

Outside, you’ve got a fenced off yard to protect from… sea lions? Sharks? What’s gonna crawl up there, a polar bear? It can’t defend against ducks because they can fly.
Honestly, the fence is puzzling me a bit.
Let’s check out the crème-de-la-creme: the lighthouse! Then we can try to find the restroom on this island.

It’s tall. It’s rocky. She’s small, but mighty. I wonder if there’s a ladder inside to climb to the top?

Oh poop. Literally.
So there is a ladder… but you gotta climb up the gaseous fumes to see through the top of the lighthouse… no thank you.
Alongside the unique plumbing situation, this home’s electricity is primarily solar-powered. And for cloudy and rainy days, there’s a battery-powered backup system too.

Paradise looks different for everyone and, for someone, this could be it.

There’s a modest appeal to a cute place like this. I couldn't call it a forever home, but a weekend trip here would be absolutely memorable.
I hope you all had a nice holiday weekend! Until next week 👋
